Compact half-ellipse co-radiator MIMO antenna

This paper focuses the design of Multiple Input Multiple Output(MIMO) antenna for satellite communications at Ku-band. The design involves the half-ellipse patch fed with two ports and isolated by dumbbell shape resonator in the ground plane. A ground plane is etched on the back side of the ellipse patch. The dumbbell shape slot is introduced at the centre of the patch and the dumbbell shape resonator is placed behind the slot in the ground plane for decoupling. The designed antenna is simulated on a micro-strip slab using FR_4 epoxy substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4. The dimensions of the dumbbell shape resonator in the ground plane are tuned to improve the isolation between the two ports. After tuning, the overall size of the antenna is 26×23.6×1.6mm. The simulated result shows that the antenna operates at the frequency band of 12.26GHz to 20.36GHz with good return loss and isolation.
