Image compression using multilevel thresholding based Absolute Moment Block Truncation Coding for WSN

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is one of the promising platforms for a variety of applications such as military based applications to health-oriented applications. However transmission of image content through WSN has several bottlenecks including limited bandwidth, low power and less memory space. Therefore, image transmission over WSN needs special attention than other applications. To overcome the above drawbacks, the field of image processing introduced many image compression algorithms. Among them, Absolute Moment Block Truncation Coding (AMBTC) have the additional qualifications of increasing the lifetime of the sensor node by reducing the computational time, better image quality and high compression ratio when compared to the existing compression techniques. In this paper, an attempt has been made to realize the effectiveness of the AMBTC by utilizing the histogram based multilevel thresholding. From the simulation results, the proposed AMBTC method achieves efficient image compression and suitable for WSN. Performance metrics such as quality of the image, computational Time (T), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Compression Ratio (CR) are determined and analyzed by using MATLAB.
