Software defined networking for heterogeneous access networks

5G is currently being investigated and defined while Time-Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Networks (TWDM-PONs) and Digital Broadcasting Systems (DBS) are respectively standardised and deployed. Software Defined Networking (SDN) can provide reconfigurability, the stringent latency requirements, adaptive network functionality, and the Quality of Experience (QoE) that a heterogeneous next generation access network ecosystem needs. These new network requirements are imposed by the continuous growth of the internet, the explosion of smart devices and the increasing attempts to consolidate Mobile Fronthauling (MFH) with emerging IP based video streaming applications. This paper deliberates on the technical challenges related to the deployment of SDN for heterogeneous access and how an SDN enabled orchestration layer can absorb the rapidly increasing demand for high quality IP based service delivery. In particular the concepts of network function decentralisation, ubiquitous support for MFH using CPRI and CPRI over Ethernet (CPRIoE) services, OLT-side intelligent caching using local NFV, QoE assurance via CDN ISP collaboration, and local video streaming replacement services by using OLT-side SatIP servers are presented.
