The Optimal Setup Angle For Direct Cad/Cam machining

This investigation presents an study on the effects of machine part setup orientation on machining time. For a multi-axis milling machine, each individual axis of the machine has its own maximum velocity and acceleration. In order to have an optimal cutting speed, we propose that all the axes of a machine tool should be kept, simultaneously at their maximum speeds, whenever possible. In this paper, the relationship between machine tool kinematics and cutter path geometry are investigated. A formula for calculating the workpiece setup angle for optimal cutting speed is analytically derived. A simulation package is developed; several cases are studied for illustration.
