A study on quality of experience of controlling a device remotely in an IoT environment

As great attention has been paid to the Internet of Things (IoT), which allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely, related research and standardization are being actively conducted. However, observing and controlling devices at a satisfactory level is still a challenging task. In our preliminary study, we proposed architecture that uses the user's smartphone as an IoT gateway. In this paper, apart from several competing IoT standards, we compare and analyze how to control legacy devices remotely based on existing technology and its performance and quality level. In the experiment of controlling a car navigation system, we evaluate the response time and the data usage for our proposed platform and TeamViewer commercial product.
