Employee Contacts 2400 V—What We Learned From the Event

While performing a routine unlock and energization on a medium-voltage motor starter, the job scope changed to involve troubleshooting the equipment to attempt to find the cause of apparent linkage binding. As the electrical worker began reassembling the starter and inserting the large double-barrel fuses, he inadvertently pushed the racking assembly in, which caused the shutters to open and the stabs to contact the energized 2400-V bus. The worker's bare right hand was on the fuse ferule and the electrical current entered his body through his hand and exited through his left knee. This paper describes the incident in detail and discusses what was learned from the event.
