Parallel with progress in scientific technology, human capabilities have been expanded in combination with machinery. Concomitant with these marvelous advances, the styles of communications between machine and man are diversifying. The role of any man-machine interface is becoming more and more important with each advance in available technology. Take for example modern airplanes. Their performance and functions now extend far beyond the physical sensory and judgment capabilities of human beings. The man-machine interface in new aircraft must be reviewed and updated to correspond with rapid progress of the technology used in airplanes. In the past, a pilot had to have the capability to understand flying conditions at a glance from the information given by a number of gauges, and to make the correct judgment. Nevertheless, pilots were proud of this capability. The electronic display systems used in recent airplanes, however, permit pilots to selectively obtain the necessary information for each given instance and to make an informed decision. The introduction of electronic instruments has made increased maneuverability and safety for airplanes with a smaller flight crew possible In this paper, I will describe the current status, trends and the future of vehicle-use display systems which are desirable as man- machine interfaces, referring to products Nippondenso has developed and is currently producing.
