Determining optimum base stations configuration for TOA localization inside celullar networks

Localization inside cellular networks is an area of intense research in order to meet the demands of location based services and emergency positioning systems. In this paper we determine the optimum base stations configuration for TOA localization inside cellular networks. The location of the target mobile is calculated using nonlinear least squares, maximum likelihood, linear least squares and weighted linear least squares methods. By comparing the performances of the localization methods and the values of the Cramer Rao bound for different test scenarios, we determine an optimum base station number for positioning inside cellular networks. We also determine that base station position does not significantly influence localization accuracy, as most localization scenarios will have the target inside a polygon drawn by the base station positions.
