A SMES-based adaptive damping controller design in wind power system

The large scale integration of wind power generation would bring a lot of new challenges into power system stability issues. Meanwhile, the traditional lead-lag phase compensation based damping control scheme could only provide limited damping in case of variable operation conditions and system configurations. With that in mind, this paper conducts the small signal stability analysis in wind power system at first, and then proposes an adaptive damping control scheme. This scheme is designed based on SMES and consists of two parts: online model estimation and self-optimizing pole shifting control. Thus it could provide effective damping for a wide range of operation conditions and system configurations. Simulations are undertaken in the 4-machine 2-area wind power system. Finally, the simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control scheme and show a better damping performance over the conventional control scheme.
