Flexible low-scattering metasurface utilizing randomly distributed elements of variable sizes

A flexible low-scattering metasurface is presented in the paper. By randomly distributing various dimensional elements along the surface, the proposed design can mimic a diffuse reflection surface, achieving a broadband backward low-scattering property. Through optimization, flexible samples composed of metallic-element-printed film and flexible substrate are designed, fabricated and measured in microwave regime. The full-wave simulation and measurement results show that the proposed metasurface can obtain nearly 10dB radar cross section (RCS) reduction across the X-band by coating it to either the metallic plate or metallic cylinders with the thickness of only 1/8 working wavelength.
