Performance comparison of millimeter-wave communications system with different antenna beamwidth

This paper presents the utilization of the ADS Ptolemy system simulator for RF circuits and a ray tracing simulator for antenna and propagation, to compare performance of a given mmWave beamforming system of 28 GHz frequency band, 800 MHz bandwidth with different, i.e. 5°, 10°, and 20°, half-power beamwidth (HPBW) of base station antennas in outdoor-to-indoor propagation scenario. Simulation results in terms of delay profile, delay spread, frequency response, and overall system performance in terms of error vector magnitude (EVM) are shown and analyzed. The results show that the EVM of 5° HPBW case is significantly better than that of 10° and 20° HPBW cases. EVM is better than -23 dB for LOS positions. For NLOS positions where the direct signal is blocked by the concrete pillars or walls, thanks to the multiple reflections and beam steering, the received signal still secures EVM in most cases better than -15 dB.
