Evaluation Of Dry Sorbent Injection For In-duct SO/sub 2/ Removal

An investigation of injection of dry calcium-based sorbents into flue gas for SO/sub 2/ emissions control was conducted. lesting was performed in a nominal 10-inch-diameter duct using flue gas produced from the combustion of a medium-sulfur coal. The process variables of interest included the approach to adiabatic saturation temperature, the calcium-to-sulfur molar ratio, and interactions of water droplets and sorbent particles. Parametric results indicate that SO/sub 2/ removals increase as the flue gas approach to adiabatic saturation temperature decreases or as the calcium-to-sulfur stoichicimetric ratio increases. Comparison with tests at the same approach to saturation temperature, but with all humidification occurring in an upstream spray dryer rather than partial humidification using an atomization nozzle in the duct, reveals that the presence of water droplets in the vicinity of the sorbent particles is important.
