Application Of Monte Carlo Method To Power System Reliability Calculations

Much Of What Constitutes reliability theory today, was developed in the past two or three decades for reliability studies in such fields as electronics and space technology. In these fields, components are usually "non-reparable", and therefore a failure is considered "catastrophic" in that it terminates the useful life of the compnent. The basic premises in power systems reliability studies are different. Such systems are expected to function indefinitely and with a minimum of interruptions; faulted componentes are prompty repaired or replaced. Since a long time CFE of Mexico has been using the Monte Carlo method for quantitative evaluation of transmission and interconnection system reliability. Nowadays, the increasing application of that method in real complex network planning has set out new problems and the need of further enhancements that have been carried out: such implementation are described in the paper with an example of quantitative application.
