Electrochemical prime movers

The technology developed for solid polymer electrolyte fuel cells has been applied to electrochemical prime movers, converting DC electric energy into mechanical work. The single cell assemblies are unchanged. However, the transfer of a working fluid across the cell assembly, under reversible and controlled conditions, is used to produce work by compressing/decompressing a diaphragm or other equivalent interface. The concept is applicable to a variety of chemical species and electrolytes. Electrochemical prime movers, or motors, can be used for reciprocating and rotating functions. They are characterized by high efficiency and considerable design flexibility. Hydrogen- and air- (oxygen-) driven electrochemical prime movers and their applications are described.<>
