Non-invasive measurement of gastric myoelectrical activity and its analysis and applications

Gastric myoelectrical activity regulates gastric motility and can be measured non-invasively using abdominal surface electrodes. The noninvasive recording is called the electrogastrogram (EGG). In recent years, the EGG has received more and more attention among physicians and researchers. This paper summarizes the recent development of the EGG from the point of view of biomedical engineering. The following areas are specifically discussed: the noninvasive method of electrogastrography; the validation of electrogastrography methodology with internal recording; waveform and spectral analysis of the EGG; derivation of EGG parameters and their physiological or clinical meaning; and clinical applications of the EGG.
