Insulating Oils

General and Theoretical - Weiss and Salomon (1) report on the activities of the Committee on Insulating Oils of the International Electrotechnical Committee in Paper 137 of the Proceedings of the 12th Session of the International Conference on Large Electric Systems held in Paris, France, in the summer of 1948. The French name of this organization is Conference Internationale des Grands Reseaux Electriques a Haute Tension, usually shortened to CIGRE. (The paper by Weiss and Salomon, along with several others abstracted here, comprise the most extensive single compilation of dielectric contributions available during 1949.) In their paper, Weiss and Salomon summarize in Part I results of a questionnaire on methods of making dielectric loss measurements in oil or oil base systems, From 34 replies, it is concluded that a greater variety of measuring systems is employed than is justifiable. Part II consists of discussion on a paper by Liander (21), and it is concluded that three problems remain to be solved before an international test for evaluating transformer oils can be adopted. These problems are the determination of the complex deposit formed, the use of soluble versus insoluble oxidation catalysts, and means of correctly evaluating inhibited transformer oils.
