A 1300 nm Nd/sup 3+/-doped glass amplifier

In terms of its optimised performance, superior small signal gain and lower noise figure, a Nd/sup 3+/-doped device will out perform a Pr/sup 3+/-doped device in any glass host in terms of an amplifier operating at >1310 nm, the operating wavelength region for much of the currently installed fibre base.
