Augmented railgun with integrated XRAM current multiplication

An XRAM generator is an inductive pulsed power supply which multiplies a supply current by charging energy storage inductors in series and discharging them in parallel to a load. This principle demonstrated promising results to supply railguns in earlier works. In this work we integrated an XRAM generator into the modular augmented staged electromagnetic launcher (MASEL) by using its augmenting coils as energy storage inductors. The results of the experiments with the integrated XRAM power supply are compared with results from experiments using the conventional power supply and different augmentation coil configurations. From these investigated setups, the XRAM gun showed the best performance but suffered from reversal charging of the supply capacitors.
