Experimental study of the mobility feature and selective maximal ratio combining algorithm for UV communication

In this paper, the influence of the mobility feature of a ultraviolet (UV) communication system is explored via experiments, the performance at four different relative speeds within different valid working distance ranges are tested. In order to get the maximum communication distance of our UV communication system, a large number of repeated tests are made at 5 meter intervals. Meanwhile, Selective Maximal Ratio Combining (SMRC) Algorithm is proposed to reduce system bit error rate (BER) under moving circumstances. Experimental results suggest that based on the given power and 10^-3 bit error rate, 30 meter proved to the furthest valid working distance and the influence of mobility on UV system is almost negligible within a certain speed range. Moreover, in comparison with other diversity reception algorithms, average BER decreased notably with SMRC.
