Research and education opportunities in memory technology at the National Science Foundation

This paper traces global developments in memory technology over the past 40 years, and presents technological projections for the next 8 years. Limits to existing technologies are discussed, and emerging and breakthrough developments are identified which overcome these limits. The role of the National Science Foundation is described in relation to research and education in support of the areas of memory technology and data storage.
