Drawing-dependent losses in rare-earth-doped and heavy-metal-doped silica optical fibers

Preforms with different core diameters were prepared by MCVD technique and solution doping using aluminum as codopant in most cases. As a result of this series, we have found remarkable background loss (between the absorption bands) in four cases: doping with Pr, Nd, Sm and Ta.
