Standard frequency dissemination via the digital satellite TV network

The television companies' transmission networks may serve as an excellent means for standard frequency dissemination. In the Czech Republic a system is in operation which references the black/burst frequencies of Czech Television (CTV) programs to UTC(TP) generated at the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics (IREE). The remarkable potential of the terrestrial networks will be demonstrated with 5 ns of white phase noise. Difficulties in conjunction with the digital satellite transmission will be discussed. Large Doppler shifts may be reduced by closing the dissemination loop but residuals remain at distant locations. Analysis has been made to estimate the worst-case accuracy zones around the country. The compression encoding used for the satellite transmission causes additional white phase noise of 100 ns.
