In typical distribution systems the proliferation of non-linear loads results in a deterioration of the quality of voltage waveforms at the point of common coupling of various loads. This has led to the proposal of more stringent requirements regarding power quality; standards such IEEE-519 reflect these preoccupations. Passive filters have been used to limit the flow of harmonic currents in distribution systems. However they introduce resonances in the power system. They also tend to be bulky and the design is complex, particularly if the number of harmonic components to be canceled increases.
