On classification of eigenwaves of planar, cylindrical and spherical dielectric waveguides

The design and calculation of the characteristics of the integrated optics elements is based on the famous property of a thin layer of dielectric to concentrate the energy of electromagnetic fields in the case when this layer is put on a substrate which has smaller refraction index. A planar dielectric waveguide (a waveguiding layer bounded by parallel planes) is usually considered as a basic element of the integrated optics. It seems promising to consider, in the design of mathematical models of devices of integrated optics, a cylindrical dielectric waveguide (a waveguiding layer enclosed between coaxial cylinders) and a spherical dielectric waveguide (a waveguiding layer enclosed between concentric spheres).
