A pressed soft magnetic material for motor applications

A new soft magnetic material has been developed for AC and DC motor applications. The motor components are made from steel particles using a powder metallurgical process in contrast to stacking punched laminations. This new material offers many manufacturing advantages. Because of its low eddy current loss, it has good high frequency magnetic properties, 40 W/lb core loss, measured at 400 Hz and 15 kG. Components made from this magnetic material have demonstrated performance comparable to CRML at 60 Hz and superior performance compared to CRML and M-19 silicon steel at higher frequencies. The new pressed material also has outstanding DC properties when sintered.
