Study of a binocular vision-based fingertip positioning system

Virtual Reality (VR) is one of the developing hi-techs in recent years. For the purpose of users' controlling a computer-generated virtual object with only fingertips, a fingertip positioning scheme is brought forth within this paper, which performs as follows: The system uses the elliptical model to detect the skin regions, then locates fingertips after thinning the region; meanwhile, two parallel cameras are calibrated and rectified so that images captured from them are in a same plane. After that, the fingertips' coordinates are calculated on the foundation of the binocular vision theory. The system has been proved efficient via several experiments, which also prove that the system is light insensitive.
