Propagation characteristics of Managua city based on Standard Propagation Model (SPM) at 850 MHz for 3G-WCDMA systems

In this paper, we use the Standard Propagation Model (SPM), as a path loss prediction model to analyze propagation characteristics of Managua city in order to implement coverage in a 3G-WCDMA network. SPM is integral part of propagation model used in today's radio network planning tools like ATOLL®. This contribution describes how the SPM can be calibrated and applied as a propagation model that can be used by a mobile network operator for the daily radio planning process in a certain area. For this purpose, we performed a drive test (DT) measurement campaign. The performance of the model at 850 MHz is analyzed by comparing the predictions with the results from the measurement campaign at five representative sites in the city of Managua. Our results show that, overall along the test route, the capacity performances are dictated by the power of the communication links. Finally, this work could be used to identify coverage problems and improve it in a given area.
