Shape-memory alloys in reconfigurable antennas

Shape-memory alloys have the potential to provide a large range of reconfigurability within mechanically reconfigurable antenna designs. This paper presents a study on the use of Shape-memory alloys in providing reconfigurability in antennas. First an assessment of the suitability of Shape-memory alloys for use within antenna design was conducted. Secondly a proof of concept reconfigurable square loop antenna prototype is implemented using Shape-memory alloys as the radiating element. Shape-memory alloys are used to adjust the loop circumference and therefore the antenna's resonant frequency. Simulation and measurements confirm that the antenna is reconfigurable, although the desired reconfigurability was not achieved
