Validation of total water vapor and liquid water algorithm for the ADEOS-II/AMSR: using SSM/I observations

The simulated brightness temperatures, T/sub B/, at two channels of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) system on the ADEOS-II satellite (frequencies of 23.8 and 36.5 GHz at vertical polarization) were used to develop a physical technique to simultaneously retrieve total atmospheric water vapor content and total cloud liquid water content for nonprecipitating conditions over the ocean. Coefficients and approximation functions used in an algorithm were determined by numerical integration of the radiative transfer equation for channel characteristics of AMSR and SSM/I. The check of the suggested algorithm was carried out for the simulated T/sub B/ values and also for the SSM/I observations at 22.2 and 37.0 GHz using the radiosonde-SSM/I match up data set supplied by the National Space Development Agency, Japan.
