An energy saving solution for wireless communication equipment

At current, the communications industry is still at the fast-growing stage. A large number of new base stations and equipment rooms will surely bring an enormous growth in energy consumption. As the enterprises need to maintain a sustainable development and the operators have to face the financial and social pressures from high energy consumption, it is very urgent for the operators to build green and energy-saving networks. In wireless communication equipment, the power consumption of the Radio Frequency (RF) part accounts for 80% of the overall power consumption and that of a Power Amplifier (PA) accounts for 80% of the RF part. This paper probes into new energy-saving technologies from the key components PAs. These new technologies are expected to reduce energy consumption by improving the PA efficiency through intelligent voltage adjustment. Moreover, these technologies will be able to save energy for the base stations while guaranteeing services by dividing busy and idle hours through sophisticated management. This paper focuses on a smart software energy saving solution. According to the network load, this solution can dynamically adjust equipment power consumption, and therefore overcome the problem of serious energy waste caused by the always on PAs in the base station system. This solution is a dynamic realtime adjustment solution. Based on the current traffic amount, it can centralized schedule service data to certain sub-frames, shut down the idle RF channels and PAs that correspond to the symbols without useful signals, and finally successfully save energy. This software-based energy saving technology achieves good effect with the minimal reconstruction difficulty and the lowest cost. It has perfect compatibility as it can be applied to both a new network and an existing network. This paper further describes how the energy saving solution extends from “a point” of a base station to the whole wireless network to achieve network-level three-dimensional resilient energy saving based on the innovative equipment process and network infrastructure.
