Effect of tensile, torsional and compressive stresses in amorphous wires

Amorphous wires with a circular cross section have a disordered atomic structure and exhibit excellent physical properties such as large Barkhausen jump and the Matteucci effect. The unique characteristics of the wire include robust geometry, ability to be twisted, bundled, torsioned and arrayed. These advantages, together with excellent magnetic characteristics, are quite attractive in novel sensors for measurement of acceleration, torque, in rotary encoders, non-contact switches and security devices. In this investigation, the effect of tensile, compressive and torsional stresses on the magnetic properties of high and low magnetostrictive wires produced by Unitika Ltd., Japan were studided. They include SENCY AF-10, Fe- Si-B, highly magnetostrictive as-quenced wire and its as-drawn version, DF10- 50; AC-20, Co-Fe-Si-B as-quenched low magnetostriction wire and its as-drawn and annealed version, DC2T-100, and Co-Si-B as-quenched negative magnetostriction wire.
