The magnetic properties of pulsed laser deposited single crystal MnZn-ferrite thin films

The magnetic properties of pulsed laser deposited MnZn-ferrite single crystal thin films have been characterized by static and microwave techniques. Because of their large resistivity and high permeability, ferrites are very important in the design of many static and microwave devices such as isolators, circulators, and phase shifters. Since modern technology is shifting towards miniaturization, it is highly desirable to explore techniques to synthesize thin film ferrite components for these and other device applications. Several synthesis processes for thin film ferrites have already been successfully demonstrated. These include: sol-gel, rf- and dc-sputtering, and ferrite plating. In 1989 Ogale et al. demonstrated that ferrite film could be synthesized by pulsed laser ablation. In this paper we examine the dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy and ferrimagnetic resonance on oxygen partial pressure and substrate temperature for a series of pulsed laser deposited MnZn-ferrite films. These results are correlated with the structural analysis obtained by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.
