Link Duration for Infrastructure Aided Hybrid Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks in Highway Scenarios

In vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), the wireless communication link is fragile because of vehicles' fast moving characteristics, which has facilitated extensive researches on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) link properties in recent decade. However, many applications need infrastructure's assistance, leading to that a link's actual characteristic is jointly determined by both direct V2V and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links. Given the information of the vehicular mobility pattern and some preknown position relations, this paper analyzes and derives the link duration properties as a closed-form mathematical result in the infrastructure aided vehicular ad hoc networks. Extensive simulations have shown that the analytical results from our model can approach the statistic results. Moreover, results from this paper can help better design transmission protocol and enhance the corresponding system performance.
