Motion estimation and motion compensated medical image sequence compression using SPIHT

Massive amount of storage capacity is required to store medical image sequences in their raw form. Medical image sequences play an important role; hence it is obligatory to develop a system that produces high degree of compression while preserving the medical information. Therefore lossless compression is needed to reduce the consumption of expensive resources such as hard disk space or transmission bandwidth. The method that combines SPIHT and an inter-frame coding with motion vectors is proposed to improve the compression ratio. Inter-frame coding is used to exploit the correlation among image sequences. To begin with SPIHT is applied with fast block matching process. Compression Ratio and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio are compared with other state of art coding.
