Can Testing Keep Up With Near-gigahertz Digital Circuits?

The operating frequency and complexity of digital integrated circuits are inevitably rising. This creates a need for more sophisticated testing at ever-higher frequencies and data rates. Papers at this conference discuss prescalers operating above 20GHz and microprocessors operating at 100MHz. The same technology which can produce a microprocessor with a data rate of 100Mb/s can produce a 100-gate communications chip operating up to 50 times faster. Some sections of large logic chips operate at over 1GHz. How can these functions be tested accurately?
