The role of governments in IPv6 transition

Along with the gradual depletion of the current IPv4 Internet protocol address blocs, the issue of the new version of Internet protocol transition and support is getting more and more topical. Nowadays, IPv6 does not represent a topic for IT specialists only, but also for governments and policy and decision makers that more and more aware of the IPv6 role in the process of ensuring the access to the Internet for all citizens and in the issues of competitiveness and technology neutrality. This paper is focused on the role of governments (including decision and policy makers) in preparing the IPv6 and the possibilities individual governments and the European Commission have in supporting this process, including specific examples and the evaluation of their effectiveness, which will be illustrated especially on the example of the Czech Republic. Part of the tools evaluation is also the comparison of individual public administrations 'preparedness for IPv6, which has been developed within the GEN6 project (Governments ENabled with IPv6).
