A linear resistive single side-band (SSB) up-converter for E-band wireless communication

In this paper, a resistive single side-band (SSB) up-converter implemented for high speed E-band wireless communication is presented. The SSB up-converter consists of two resistive IQ mixer cells, on-chip Marchand balun and two Lange couplers for quadrature LO signal generation. The Marchand balun is designed with common-mode rejection to achieve better in-band amplitude and phase balanced behavior. The external IF quadrature hybrids avoid the bulk passive circuits in MMIC chip. Besides, they will ease the implementation of up-converter with lower sideband (LSB) or upper side-band (USB) suppression. The measured results show conversion loss of 11 dB and sideband suppression higher than 20 dB from 75 to 90 GHz. LO to RF isolation and RF output 1dB compression point have been measured to be more than 30 dB and -4 dBm, respectively. The resistive SSB up converter consumes no DC current and the chip size is only 2 × 1.5 mm².
