Monitoring Polar Ice Sheets using TanDEM-X

Accurate knowledge of ice velocity, grounding line position, and elevation information and their evolution over time are crucial for ice flux measurements and subsequently for mass balance studies of glaciers and ice sheets. Here, we evaluate the utility and limitations of TanDEM-X for monitoring ice velocity, the grounding line position, and surface elevation over time and show preliminary results. Spatial coverage is limited in comparison to the extent of the ice sheets. Strategic application of the resource using a set carefully placed acquisitions leads to an ice sheet wide impact of the mission. Using a set of carefully developed test sites, and with generous support from DLR we establish a unique reference data set in Antarctica and Greenland.
