Performance comparison of position based routing protocols using different mobility models

The issue of routing and maintaining packets between MNs in MANET has always been a challenge due to the dynamic changes in the network layout. Simulation is key in developing and testing new MANET routing protocols. The mobility of nodes is an important factor in modelling and simulation of MANETs. The aim of this paper is to assess the performance of Local Area Dynamic routing protocol (LANDY) and two major routing protocols under different mobility models. Four widely used mobility models, Random Waypoint, Reference Point, Gauss-Markov and Manhattan have been chosen and tested in OPNET. These were selected to represent the possibility of practical application in the future. A comparative study of major mobility models is presented here. Firstly, both the advantages and disadvantages of mobility models are summarized. We have selected these mobility models to include both the Independent - Entity and Dependent - Group Mobility Models. Secondly, we analysed the effect of speed on the performance of protocols under each of the above mobility models. Finally, using OPNET simulator, we analysed the effect of different mobility models on the performance of MANET routing protocols. Results indicate that performance of the routing protocol varies over different mobility models. In addition more coordinated movements of the nodes reduce the number of control packets required to be distributed over the network; and reduce the routing overhead.
