Multi-service blocking models in Maple

Modern radio systems now offer more than just a single PSTN voice service. As the demand for higher bandwidth services increases, radio systems are accommodating such services. There is a need for a capacity model which can calculate the grades of service experienced by users of PSTN and higher bandwidth services in a multi-service radio system for a given cell population. The population is defined as multiples of distinct user profiles, where each user profile is defined in terms of call demand statistics for the average user in that category. This paper describes a novel method which can be used to develop an analytic multi-service blocking model. The author has written such a model in Maple, which is currently used by product development groups in Nortel as an aid to capacity planning and system design for radio products. The method described is analytic rather than Monte-Carlo, as there are several distinct advantages to such a model type: the computation time is a matter of seconds on a standard PC platform and it is constant, regardless of the probabilities of the events being modelled.
