Thermal infrared surveys for mapping surface temperature and sulfur dioxide plumes at Sakurajima Volcano (Minamidake A-crater, Showa crater) using the airborne hyperspectral scanner

This study presents airborne hyperspectral scanner (ARTS) images that capture the continuous eruptive activity of Sakurajima Volcano (Apr. 2008 to Nov. 2010). We acquired visible to infrared hyperspectral image data at the Sakurajima Volcano crater (Minamidake A-crater, Showa crater) and detected a significant change of geothermal distributions and sulfur dioxide plume abundance between Apr. 2008 and Nov. 2010. We demonstrate how hyperspectral infrared images can be used to detect geothermal activities correlated with eruptive activity.
