Increasing the short-circuit current in a shore connection system

During the past few years, lowering the pollution level in harbors has been the subject of various projects. The main idea is to supply the ship's electrical system when berthed from a shore distribution network so the on-board generators can be turned off. The Shore Connection Distribution Grid represents an HV electrical infrastructure with a static frequency conversion substation. To ensure ship protection discrimination, the Shore Connection Distribution Grid needs to provide sufficient short-circuit current values. The aim of this paper is to show how it is possible to increase the short-circuit current inside a Shore Connection Distribution Grid. This paper proposes a set of feasible solutions to increase this current while also taking into account economic and technical aspects. Simulations are carried out in order to assess each proposed solution.
