Experimental investigation on aluminium LM4 strengthened by Al2O3 nano particle

The effect of characteristics of aluminium based composite with varying the composition (1, 1.5, 2.5, 5 vol. %) nano sized Al2O3 particles at 950 °C preheating temperature was investigated. The composite were fabricated by stir casting techniques at atmospheric condition without the use of flux or protective inert gas atmosphere. The nano-particles were uniformly dispersed in stir method and the average grain sizes of composites in 40nm. The mechanical property of fabricated composite was calculated by using of mechanical testing method. The results show that presence of nano size Al2O3 particles better property values. This study is an attempt to investigate the effects of adding nano particles to aluminium metal matrix. Also it was found that the Al2O3 particles play a significant role in improving tensile value of alloying system. The optimum amount of reinforcement determined by evaluating the density and mechanical properties of composites. Hardness and impact tests were carried out in order to identify mechanical properties. The results shows that the composite containing 1.5vol. % reinforcement particles fabricated have homogeneous microstructure as well as improved mechanical properties
