Comparison of IEC and NEMA/IEEE motor standards, Part I

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards covering performance, rating, and testing for electric motors are summarized and compared to National Electrical Manufacturer's Association (NEMA) and/or Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) standards. In general motors designed to NEMA/IEEE standards should be suitable for the application from a rating, performance, and testing viewpoint. The question of dimensions and tolerances will normally be dictated by the driven equipment to which the motor is to be assembled. This should stimulate constructive thought prior to a simple request of domestic motor manufacturers “Can you meet IEC Standards?”
