Nickel cadmium batteries for photovoltaic applications

As a result of rising maintenance costs in remote areas, many users rely on low-cost alternatives to the usual energy sources. One of those alternatives, solar energy conversion, has become more widespread, particularly in those sites only accessible by air or sea, or only during certain seasons. Solar energy offers a viable option in applications such as offshore navigational aids, communication repeater stations, cathodic protection along oil and gas pipelines, and in other remote areas. Users in these areas traditionally choose lead acid batteries for their installations. As a result, a lack of understanding of nickel cadmium battery in photovoltaic applications exists. This paper focuses on the operating conditions specific to photovoltaic applications. Its aim is to demonstrate that nickel cadmium batteries may be used effectively in photovoltaic applications and that their specific advantages can be translated into long-term benefits and cost savings.
