1997 report on IEC winding wire standardization activities

Magnet wire, more commonly called winding wire on a world-wide basis, is a major component in most electrical devices. Manufacturers, and others involved with the sale, distribution, and use of winding wire need to be well informed about the standards, test methods and procedures that apply in order to be able to effectively participate and compete in an ever expanding global economy. The most widely accepted international standards for winding wire have been developed, documented, approved, and printed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The principal focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the IEC standards and test methods that apply to winding wire (and wire packaging) including the most recent information concerning standards and test procedures that are being modified or under development. Also the actual process used to develop IEC standards is discussed briefly in order to promote a better level of understanding and appreciation of how input from all of the participating member countries from around the world is gathered and integrated to produce the resulting widely accepted international standards.
