Modelling of an optical threshold element based On SOAs

Nonlinear semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are attractive because they allow fast signals processing and can be employed within integrated optical circuits. Here we present a model for an all-optical threshold element composed by two SOA-based sub-elements. In the proposed model self phase modulation and nonlinear polarization rotation are exploited to obtained a transfer function typical of threshold gates.
