Case study: Matrix printer: No pulleys, belts, or screw

A new design trend in industry — developing products with few parts so they can be manufactured easily on an automated assembly line — is embodied in IBM Corp.'s Proprinter. The tabletop printer, a wire-matrix type for the company's personal computer line, does not have the usual array of screws, pulleys, belts, and brackets. The parts simply snap together.
