Braking magnets for watt-hour meters

The function of a braking magnet for a watt-hour meter is to produce a retarding torque acting to balance the electromagnetic driving torque. This retarding torque must be strictly proportional to the velocity of the disk for the watt-hour meter to register accurately. This is readily seen from a consideration of the fundamental watt-hour meter equation.¹
