Managing network flexibility in a SONET/SDH environment

It is noted that the SONET/SDH (synchronous optical network/synchronous digital hierarchy) transmission structure together with modern technological developments is offering opportunities for improved levels of flexibility within British Telecom's (BT's) transmission network. By incorporating a management methodology consistent with BT's overall strategic network management plan, coordination of the flexibility function with other network operations is maximized and operational efficiency is ensured to meet the growing telecommunications needs of BT's customers. Issues discussed include management philosophy, the control architecture, and interface and protocol considerations.<>
